Make Sure Your Passport Is In Order

If you'll be traveling to the World Cup it is important to start thinking about your passport now. South Africa requires that your passport will be valid for at least 30 days after you leave there. Your expiration date should later than July 23, 2010 if you stay through the round of 16. If you're not certain of the dates, look at the match schedule to get an idea. Better yet, just make sure your expiration is in August 2010 or later.

If your passport expires before then, you need to renew it and you should just get that out of the way as soon as possible. There is still a lot of time, but it is a somewhat bureaucratic process and it is just best to allow yourself plenty of time so you don't have to worry about it when you need to be planning for the trip.

If you need to renew, it is time to pay a visit to the US State Department. That link is the starting point for new applicants and renewals.

Thanks for the note, Andy. I was just looking into the passport/visa issue today. It's worth noting that US citizens do not need a visa to visit South Africa. Perhaps you covered this already; I'm just getting caught up for the first time in a while.

That's right, no visa required if your stay is under 90 days. I believe there is still a visa involved, but it is just stamped on your passport when you enter through customs. Or at least that is the way a lot of countries do it.
