Update on Stadiums, Fan Parks, and Travel Outside South Africa
I saw this article from FIFA.com and thought it was an interesting possibility. With airfares between Cape Town and Johannesburg running between $500 and $700, how much worse could it be to stay in another country for part of the trip? How cool would it be to stay in Mauritius or Mozambique? I'll tell you how cool: a round trip between Cape Town and Mauritius on British Airways runs anywhere from $450 to $2,400 depending on travel days. That trip on South African Airways runs about $1300 any day of the week. A trip to Maputo, Mozambique from Cape Town is $800. So unless these rates change, I don't see much point in staying in another country.
In stadium news, several have recently been completed and IOL reports that all new stadiums will be done in November with the exception of Cape Town, in December. Doubters beware. And speaking of Cape Town, have a look at what they're building here. Awesome!
One of the fun things to do at World Cups is visit the fan parks to watch matches. I was glad to read that Cape Town is doing it right.
And then there's this minor bit about tourist centers set up by the government, which are sure to be useful.
